Hays Academy of Hair Design
DANA GANOUNG, 31, is a cosmetology student at Hays Academy of Hair Design in Hays, Kansas, where she was named September Business Student of the Month. Dana chatted with BeautyLink about her perspective on being a beauty school student after working 10 years in the restaurant industry.
Aside from the creativity, I was inspired by how profitable a career in beauty can be. Many people don’t realize how lucrative the beauty industry can be.
School management, instructors and students all coming together to support an instructor who was diagnosed with breast cancer.
BeautyLink: What surprised you about going to beauty school? Dana: I didn’t realize I’d be learning about chemistry, electricity and anatomy and the amount of work involved. At fi rst, I didn’t know how I’d be able to do it all because I have a daughter and five sons, but it’s much easier when you’re doing something you’re excited about.
BeautyLink: How were you selected as Hays Academy Business Student of the Month? Dana: We’re evaluated based on our service numbers in the student salon and our retail sales. I’m always talking about what I do and encouraging people to come in for a service. Most people love getting their hair done, so it’s never a hard sell. I also make sure that I carry school business cards with me at all times and hand them out to friends and people I meet.

BeautyLink: What makes a good beauty school instructor and a good campus culture? Dana: Patience and being open-minded are a must
for instructors. I’ve never asked a question and not received an answer from one of our instructors. I’m not afraid to ask any question because I know the instructors want me to succeed. I also love how our school’s management, instructors and students all came together to support an instructor who was diagnosed with breast cancer. We’ve held several fundraisers and even designed a special T-shirt to raise money for breast cancer research.

BeautyLink: Was a career in beauty something you’d always dreamed of achieving? Dana: Actually, I had not given serious thought to
becoming a hairstylist early in my career. I began working for Pizza Hut more than 10 years ago and continued to receive promotions, eventually becoming a general manager. But at a certain point, I realized a career change was in order and began thinking about what I would love to be doing every day. I can honestly say that I look forward to being in the classroom, and I didn’t feel that way when I was working in the restaurant business.
BeautyLink: What advice would you offer to someone thinking about enrolling in beauty school? Dana: Be interested in learning not just the technique but the business. There are people who say you can’t make a lot of money, but if you think about it from a business angle and commit yourself to growing and improving, you can be tremendously successful.

BeautyLink: What prompted you to choose a career in beauty? Dana: My sister enrolled at Hays Academy three
months before me, and I liked hearing her talk about what she was learning in the classroom.
BeautyLink: Upon graduation, what do you hope to achieve? Dana: My sister will soon be graduating from Hays
Academy. Ultimately, we’d love to open a salon together.
