The Communicator - Volume 2, Issue 1 - (Page 7) president’s message By Nikki Affinito, PCAM HAPPY NEW YEAR! As we begin 2009 I want to thank our membership and board of directors for the privilege and honor afforded me to serve as this year’s president. I have had the pleasure of serving on our board with a great group of people who have chosen to dedicate their time, resources and commitment to continue building the success of the CAI Bay Area/Central California Chapter and to help us become the premier association dedicated to providing quality education and programs to our membership. As the board makes preparations for its incoming slate of officers, I smile as I recall the many new acquaintances I’ve made this year. We have a lot of experts in this field and we are always looking for great speakers at our events so make 2009 the year to get involved in CAI and make a difference. Our executive director, Kelvin Nanney, has been instrumental in taking us to the next level. Among our accomplishments in 2008: • The re-launch of our re-designed magazine, The Communicator, for quarterly publication with both a print and electronic version. The Communicator is filled with timely and informative articles, providing great resources to our membership. • Resumption of the publication of the annual directory • New educational forums in the form of quarterly luncheons and dinners • The Essentials course for board members • Social events such as the golf tournament • An updated Web site, www.caibaycen.com • Electronic invitations and registration for our functions • New educational offerings in the South Bay and on the Peninsula • Plans for North Bay programming in 2009 • Preparations for the November 2009 tradeshow Become part of the progress that our organization is making. There are openings on several committees. Please contact us so we can connect you to a rewarding volunteer project. With so much uncertainty and so many challenges surrounding us, I feel now more than ever that it is important to concentrate on specific areas so we can add value and return on your investment in membership. Increasing Resources and Membership Value: We will continue to build on our resources and create value by adding more programs for our members such as our back-to-basics Essentials courses for board members, law seminars and monthly educational seminars. CLAC (California Legislative Action Committee) continues to provide great value and helps us use the grassroots approach when needed to block legislation that is contrary to the betterment of our CIDs or to promote a new bill that makes sense. Meeting and Exceeding Member Needs: As we assess our programs and events, we need your feedback to better serve you, our member. So I reach out to you: Please speak up to let us know how to better serve you by providing us with topics and speaker ideas that interest you. Through your feedback, we select our educational topics and speakers for programs. In addition you asked for more programs with a greater variety of locations and times of day. Consequently, we have instituted programs in new locations including an evening program in Foster City with plans to add more evening and Saturday events in 2009. Organizational development and relationship-building: By reinstating past events and programs we are providing new opportunities for members to build relationships making it easier for them to connect to the people and resources they need – that makes their jobs easier. We are also developing new opportunities for involvement in the chapter – volunteer on a CAI committee this year and really add value to your membership. Back in the days when I was a community/portfolio manager, I couldn’t get enough of CAI events. One of my favorites was going to the Claremont Hotel for the annual tradeshow/ educational Expo. I am proud to announce that the Expo will return in November 2009. We have been working hard to strengthen and build our membership and have accomplished a lot under Ric Perez’s leadership. Thank you, Ric, for doing an outstanding job! Thanks to our hard-working leadership, CAI Bay Area/Central California Chapter is seen as an influential player in the HOA world. I look forward to a year of helping our members find unique answers that will help them overcome challenges, look to our experts for answers and, at the same time, provide an outlet to meet more of our members and share our resources. We can’t forget that in this stressful environment we all need an outlet for fun and I am committed to making our events fun, even with so much on our plates! Thank you, Nikki Affinito, PCAM Vice President, Union Bank of California CAI Bay Area & Central California Chapter 2009 President The Communicator • 7 http://www.caibaycen.com
