The Communicator - Volume 1, Issue 3 - (Page 7) president’s message By Ric Perez The tried and true landscaping philosophy of throwing water at turf to ensure a lush green look is no longer a viable approach, unless of course you are willing and able to incur exorbitant costs to do so. AS JAMES TAYLOR once sang, “Summer’s here and I’m for that …” Unfortunately, with that wistful lyric comes a disturbing bit of realism with the recent press releases from the Governor and various water districts throughout the state. The overall lack of average rainfall this past winter has left us with drought conditions – once again – forcing rationing, higher costs and mandatory conservation efforts. How do these “solutions” impact homeowners, Boards and Managers? Beyond the obvious, some hard choices must be made in terms of trying to balance aesthetic/curb appeal for communities with property value maintenance (in a down market no less) and fiscal responsibility. The tried and true landscaping philosophy of throwing water at turf to ensure a lush green look is no longer a viable approach, unless of course you are willing and able to incur exorbitant costs to do so. Frankly, it hasn’t been for some time, leading many service experts towards various recommendations including turf replacement, painted turf (ugh!), the introduction of more drought tolerant plant materials and other eco friendly suggestions. CAI continues to pursue ways to inform and educate us all by sharing a collective expertise via forums and events. Most recently, CAI held a trade show in Stockton (always a popular and well attended locale for events) as well as a foray back into the South Bay, in Campbell after an extended absence. These well-attended sessions are inspiring and encourage us to continue to pursue holding programs for our various experts and volunteers. We also encourage participation via our membership, and are always seeking more volunteers to join the organization to take advantage of the many educational benefits as Board members, business affiliates, etc. Contact Kelvin Nanney, CMP, at kelvinn@meetingpossibilities.com for further information.
