Normally, one visualizes a path as something placed before them, rather than from the perspective of looking over one’s shoulder at where they have already been. It is this perspective that the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) Career and Knowledge Pathwayssm (CKPsm) positions itself in presenting the CKPsm approach to education and career development. CKPsm promises to be a leap forward from other educational offerings in the market. experience). It not only addresses learner needs to find the personal meaning of new information but it also inspires educators to design more meaningful learning experiences. The desired outcome of this approach is to move the education process from passive delivery of a theory content package to facilitating the incorporation of information in order to facilitate real-life skills and knowledge. Let’s look at traditional education… This approach assumes that knowledge seekers realize their need for information, accurately determine what it is they need to know, select and complete content that is applicable to their need, and incorporate the new information into their existing knowledge with the end result being the creation of applicable knowledge (Fig. 1). This traditional approach presents a few barriers to gaining information that will subsequently be transformed into useful knowledge. • Limited audience interaction • Content is presented in a pre-determined linear progression based upon the instructor’s framework • The information is stacked in a way that requires learners to layer newly acquired concepts onto their personal paradigm • Applicability of new information may be difficult to translate depending upon specificity of the content perspective While there are aspects of the Pathways approach that will remain reassuringly familiar, CKPsm distinguishes itself through both the philosophy and variety of methods that are being employed to create this inclusive educational experience. Perhaps the most transformational aspect of CKPsm is the underpinning of Contextualized Learning (CL), which forms the developmental framework for its content. For education to successfully respond to the needs of this changing workforce it must work with students to develop their foundation skills and improve their ability to transfer skills from one context to another, think critically, and continuously acquire new knowledge and skills.” (Baker et al, 2009) The theory behind CL begins with the assumption that the mind looks to attach meaning to new information within its existing frame of reference. It has been described as a “conception of teaching and learning that helps teachers relate subject matter content to real world situations” (Berns & Erickson, 2001, p. 2).
