Digital, Mobile, Global Efficiencies and Hindrances in the Modern Case Manager’s Environment BY BRIANNE BAIRD R ing! Ping! Buzz. Ding! Most of us hear these sounds as we move through each day, emanating from multiple 21st century devices including smartphones, desktop computers, and tablets − and sometimes, in synchronicity. These sounds and their wondrous keepers have enhanced modern life in numerous ways, to the extent that the coining of a new phobia has been in the news recently: nomophobia, or the fear of being out of mobile phone contact (Burkey, 2012). While productivity in the modern case manager’s professional environment can be enhanced through the assistance of these contemporary technologies, their unwavering accessibility can also be an impediment to both professional efficiency and personal tranquility. DIGITAL EFFICIENCIES Compared to even five short years ago, technology has significantly changed the way health care professionals work. Wireless Internet access, now prevalently available in many public places such as hospitals and airports, is a staple for productivity. Answers to specialized questions can be obtained within seconds through search engines, industry forums, and global social networks. And the case manager’s ability to review medical records, to communicate with patients, and to do research – whether on the ground or in the air – is changing the definition of the workplace. Engineers are even working to determine a way to ensure that mobile devices – which are increasingly being used in care settings – are as sterile as a surgeon’s hands as they are passed from hand to hand, room to room (Pruss, 2012). Within the next few years, we will see notable advancements and continued immersion of these tools into the health care space. Acceptance of this technology offers case managers the unique opportunity to increase care quality, to decrease costs, and to highlight the case management profession as one that welcomes innovation and change for the benefit of all parties. TECHNOLOGICAL HINDRANCES While the aforementioned modernization of both culture and industry through technology is generally positive and inevitable, the challenges associated with these rapid advancements are hard to ignore. It seems that as the potential to communicate increases, so does the volume of communication itself. And as new technology is introduced into professions steeped in decades of process and tradition, transitions can be accompanied by friction and resistance. Consider the sheer increase in the number of messages received by an individual on an average day. Whereas 1900’s communication involved long, formal messages sent via controlled media options such as traditional mail and fax, today’s possibilities include email and social networks, with messages that ISSUE 4 • 2012 • DIGITAL http://www.naylornetwork.com/cms-nxt/
