Meeting with members of congress and administration officials, the CMSA leadership continues to educate policy makers on the important role the Case Management Model Act and Standards of Practice (SOP) play in the case management profession. In 2012, CMSA was able to have top leadership in Congress and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services meet to discuss the CM Model Act. These meetings positioned key elements of the Case Management Model Act for further examination in 2013. National Initiative: Case Management Week Several states, counties, cities, towns, and municipalities have passed proclamations recognizing National Case Management Week and the contribution of case managers in the health system. Building on the success in California with a statewide proclamation declaring a permanent CM Week, CMSA’s leadership is seeking to expand this effort to a national level. This initiative continues to gain momentum and will be a key policy initiative for the CMSA in 2013. In summary, CMSA remains the leading organization in promoting case management public policy. Going forward, CMSA’s leadership and Public Policy Committee plan to collaborate with local chapter leaders on grassroots initiatives. Regardless of political position, we can probably all agree the landscape is shifting and health care sits squarely in the crosshairs. As 2013 approaches, CMSA plans to enhance and mature its grassroots efforts, all of which seek to improve the profession and care for patients. ■ Case Management Society of America (CMSA - View useful networking contacts, chapter meetings, upcoming seminars, and the educational library to build case manager skills. And last but not least – build helpful social networking sites for case managers, such as LinkedIn® ( Also, an idea for CM Directors: Build your “Best Practice” website resources link page and include the link with your monthly or quarterly staff meeting agenda in an electronic form, so your case managers can click on the link. Or, provide a website link on your meeting Casebook Management continued from page 13 agenda that supports a topic you will be discussing. This practice of promoting easier access to self-education will help grow case manager competencies and result in informed and evidence-based best practice. The continual process of examining “where you are” in case management practice skills and knowledge, evaluating your outcomes, and benchmarking best practices through research brings value and self-accountability to case management practice. Using a Process Improvement model in our careers also helps us to stay “on the curve” and sustain best practices together. Case management leaders can also help to support excellence in practice by providing these resources to their staff and promoting ongoing discussion. ■ About the Author Wendy DeVreugd, RN, BSN, PHN, FNP, CCDS, MBA, is the senior director of case management at Kindred Healthcare, Hospital Division, West Region.
