Executive Director’s Message CCA at the Table, Tackling the State’s Biggest Issues, Advocating for its Members I By Tony Milo CCA Executive Director In its Core Finding, the Board of Directors concurs with participants and analysts who conclude that Colorado’s current fiscal situation is unsustainable and calls upon Coloradans to continue to participate in determining a pathway to realize our vision for Colorado. t’s long been said that “If you’re not at the table, you are likely on the menu.” This is a statement that, although perhaps a bit worn and trite, is profoundly true, especially when times are tough and money for programs is in short supply. CCA is your advocate, and we are experts at getting to the table and while there working to ensure your interests are represented in an assertive, professional and effective manner. One of the ways CCA was at the table this year is that I was honored to have been named by Gov. John Hickenlooper to the TBD Colorado Advisory Board. This group met a number of times thought the year, digesting and synthesizing the comments of Coloradans from all over the state. TBD (To Be Determined) Colorado engaged more than 1,200 Coloradans in an unprecedented effort to learn about, discuss and provide input on some of the most important issues facing this state. Fortified by clear, accurate data vetted by diverse panels of subject matter experts and supported by a process designed to foster discussion and identify ways forward, Coloradans engaged in a process to determine the future of their state. The 2012 phase of TBD Colorado focused on five issues: education, health, transportation, state budget and state workforce. For each, participants reviewed data, considered a variety of options, and then worked to identify those they considered to be the highest priority. Some of the highlights include: • Supporting expanded access to kindergarten and preschool • Improving health care for those on Medicaid by making the program more flexible and effective • Building a better transportation system to support our lifestyle and to promote economic growth • Finding new ways to ensure that the state’s budget is aligned with priorities and that there is adequate revenue to provide the services residents want • Recognizing the hard work of state employees and rewarding their performance In its Core Finding, the Board of Directors concurs with participants and analysts who conclude that Colorado’s current fiscal situation is unsustainable and calls upon Coloradans to continue to participate in determining a pathway to realize our vision for Colorado. The findings leave the door open for coalitions to be built to address the myriad of issues identified. CCA has taken the lead to pull together a coalition that has begun working aggressively to explore the viability of a ballot measure as early as 2013 to make the case to voters that an increase in transportation user fees is a good investment. The TBD process has left the door open … CCA is leading the charge to make TBD go from “To Be Determined” to “To Be  Done!” BY TONY MILO, CCA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR THE CONSTRUCTORS’ VOICE 2013 • 11 http://www.naylornetwork.com/coc-nxt/
