CWFC Sees Continued Successes, New Directions Colorado Construction Career Days Celebrated its 10th Anniversary The 2012 Colorado Construction Career Day again brought together many industry leaders and partners, who presented to more than 1,400 high school students, teachers, counselors and parents the best of our industry. Stormwater Training The CWFC continues to be industry leaders in Stormwater and Erosion Control training. We offered several CDOTcertified Stormwater Supervisor classes, as well as Construction Dewatering and Working Near  Waterways classes. As the construction industry continues to be exposed to risks and large fines, the CWFC will continue to train and educate the industry. By Mike Rooney Construction Workforce Foundation of Colorado Chairman General Manager of Worldwide Rental Services he Construction Workforce Foundation of Colorado (CWFC) finished its 12th year of serving Colorado’s municipal utility-heavy-highway construction industry by promoting, educating and training our current and future workforce. Below is a review of the contributions the CWFC made in 2012. Workforce Development Issues The Trustees and I continue to address the industry’s future needs for all skilled employees. As job opportunities have increased this year, contractors once again were challenged in finding skilled craftsmen in specific arenas. The industry is still expecting that 185,000 new construction workers will be needed each year in the U.S., and this is on top of the 10,000 baby boomers who are retiring every day. FMI and the Construction Users Round Table predict that in 2014 America will have a shortage of 2,000,000 skilled craftsmen. The CWFC Trustees are staying on top of these trends, and we are researching innovative solutions. Thank You CCA Associate Council The CCA Associate Council continues to support the CWFC through membership  donations from the Trailblazer  associate members, participation in fundraising activities at golf tournaments and sponsoring fundraising events. T CWFC Trustees With all these accomplishments, I  need to thank our 2012 CWFC Trustees for all their hard work. Trustees are: Gary Spaw, Johnson Auto Plaza; Don  Hanneman, Castle Rock Construction Company; Terry Kish, CCA’s director of safety and workforce development  and the Foundation’s secretary; Rick Lawrence, Lawrence Construction Company; Fred Marvel, Brannan Sand & Gravel; Joe O’Dea, Concrete Express Inc. (CEI); Tom Peterson, Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association; Nancy Ramsour, Ramsour Trucking and Consulting; and the Foundation’s legal counsel Steve  Weinstein, Berenbaum, Weinshienk  P.C. CWFC’s Second Scholarship Program and Fundraiser In April, we held our Second Annual Scholarship Program and Fundraiser. The scholarship program recognized CCA members who have made a difference by contributing their time and financial donations to the Foundation. The Trustees honored two namesakes of the Legacy Scholarships: E. Pete Honnen and Todd Thomas. We also presented 14 scholarships to worthy students who are in construction-related areas of study. Since its beginning, the CWFC has given more than 100 scholarships worth more than $160,000. We also sponsored a silent auction fundraiser that raised $7,400. Training Trust The Foundation, with guidance from the CCA Board of Directors, began to develop a Training Trust to fund needed future apprenticeship training. Terry Kish and I visited the training trust of AGC of San Diego and the Construction Industry Training Council of Washington State, where several trust models were examined and evaluated. We are planning to roll out a formal Training Trust in 2013. THE CONSTRUCTORS’ VOICE 2013 • 23 http://www.naylornetwork.com/coc-nxt/
