Manafort Brothers Keeps Rail Repair Shop Construction on Track Building a new running repair shop for the Metro-North rail yard in New Haven was one of the most challenging jobs Manafort Brothers has handled during its 70-year history. Longer than two football fields, the 602-foot by 67-foot wide building can accommodate 12 train cars. It will be used by the MTA Metro-North railroad to maintain and repair the 300-plus new rail cars that it is adding to its fleet. It includes many essential features that the Connecticut Department of Transportation lacked in its older indoor repair shop, including high quality lighting, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and safety features. Constructing the shop, the power substation, and the 4,000-square-foot support wing required an unusual depth of knowledge and the coordination of a high number of trades. Manafort served as general contractor for the project and worked By Mary Lou Jay closely with the management teams from Metro-North, DOT, and the engineer and architect teams to ensure that the project ran smoothly. It held 15 pre-installation meetings and two weekly job meetings, one with subcontractors and one with ConnDOT. The DOT constantly monitored the project on site with a full time staff of eight.
