feature Cummins POWER SYSTEMS, LLC Team Effort Pays Big Dividends By Stephen Murdoch There are few companies that can boast the longevity of Cummins, Inc. Founded in 1919, they have become a leader in the distribution of premier engine and power generation systems. Known primarily for their offerings, Cummins engines and Onan power generation systems, the local distributor Cummins Power Systems, LLC has set the standard for reliability and functionality. With expanded territories in Bermuda Islands, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Northern Virginia, New Jersey, New York City and Washington, Cummins Power Systems sees growth on the horizon. In April of 2008, Cummins Power Systems and Cummins Metropower, Inc. merged, and with this transition came an opportunity to build on the strengths of the two businesses. “The transitional period has given way to familiarity and camaraderie,” said Butch Stark, territory manager for Cummins Power Systems. “The merger has made us a stronger company by allowing us to leverage our combined best practices to better serve our customers and streamline our path to market. Most importantly, the merger has allowed us to better meet the needs of our clients.” When asked why Cummins Power Systems has been so successful, Stark explains that, in many ways, it is thanks to strong management and devoted employees. “The management team is always challenging employees to not only be good at their jobs but to also be positive corporate citizens. Leadership encourages employees to think outside of the box and allows them to be creative at their jobs, something that doesn’t go unnoticed by our clients. As our business has grown, we have always encouraged all of our employees to look at business through the lens of the customer. If we do business with others the way we would expect to be dealt with as a consumer, then we are able to build customer loyalty. We also have a strong base of knowledgeable employees who have been in the Cummins family for over 20 and 30 years. The expertise and relationships that these people bring to the table are beyond measure.” The core competency of Cummins Power Systems lies not only in its unique customer service culture but in the technology itself. “Our customers work in tough, competitive industries that require them to have the proper tools to compete and succeed. We understand our customers’ business and their specific needs. Our off-highway and automotive markets, as well as power generation success, is second to none. Our complementary business units design, manufacture, distribute and service engines and related technologies, and this allows us to stay on top of the latest in product developments.” 28 / CONNstruction / Summer 2009
