Honorable Mention Specialty - Interiors Award: M. Frank Higgins & Co., Inc., Newington, CT
Norwich Free Academy Slater Hall Museum, Norwich
T h e to p - q u a l i t y specialty flooring work done by M. Frank Higgins & Company in the Slater Museum at the Norwich Free Academy received an honorable mention at this year’s award ceremony. The company is celebrating 60 years in business. Easier access to the Slater Hall Museum for students and guests with disabilities was a key purpose of this renovation work. To achieve this goal, crews laid 11,000 square feet of Nora Rubber Flooring on four levels, including stair treads and risers that were fabricated on site. The museum’s beautiful red and white logo was precisely water jet cut at the factory and then skillfully installed by the flooring subcontractor. Featured stonework was imported from China under tight deadlines. To create the architect and owner’s vision for the museum of historical ruins from another era, the stonework had to be fashioned to custom sizes. This artist’s goal required crews to work directly with the architect to capture the desired effect. Though originally scheduled for six months, earlier project setbacks meant crews had to complete the work in four months. During the last two weeks as the Opening Day drew closer, crews worked day and night, six days a week. The subcontractor overcame many obstacles on this project including excessive moisture in the concrete. Fully aware how moisture can affect subfloors, crews worked closely with the architect and owner to develop a moisture mitigation system to resolve the problem. The rubber tile installed at Norwich Free Academy Slater Hall will be a gem for many years to come. Kathleen Cloud, vice president and marketing director, said: “The majority of our crew has been with us a long time. As they are proud of their work, we are proud of them.”
