Advocacy File TRANSIT AWARENESS DAYS 2010 THE EXECUTIVE COMMIT TEE OF the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), along with senior officials and managers from the transit industry, participated in Transit Awareness Days 2010 from 8-10 March in Ottawa. The agenda included an exclusive meeting with the Honourable John Baird, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure & Communities, which was attended by Executive Committee members. Discussion points covered recommendations emerging from the Urban Transportation Task Force (UTTF) of the Council of Ministers’ review of transit in Canada, tax incentives to promote transit and sustainable transportation, employment insurance provisions and transit access as support for job search, and the future of federal support for transit security initiatives. A Parliamentary Reception was held on the Monday evening, in which Members of Parliament, Senators, and industry stakeholders were invited to attend and dialogue with key transit industry representatives. CUTA hosted over 25 MPs and Senators, including the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Labour. The Honourable Michael Chong, Conservative MP from Wellington-Halton Hills, kick-started the day on Tuesday morning as a special breakfast guest speaker. Mr. Chong delivered a 15-minute speech on the importance of public transit to Canadian economic productivity and stressed the strategic value of a “National Transit Act.” Throughout the day, delegates met with over 80 Members of Parliament to discuss key issues of importance to the transit industry, including working towards the goals of Transit Vision 2040, transit infrastructure investment needs, the economic impact of transit investment, and encouraging the federal government to proceed with implementation of the UTTF recommendations.
