Manuel Achadinha, the CEO of BC Transit, also addressed the gathering, and spoke convincingly about the importance of strong partnerships with local governments. Rich Bacigalupo, the Vice-Chair of government affairs for the American Public Transportation Association brought greetings from APTA, and outlined important recent issues in public transit in the US and how they relate to the Canadian situation. As part of the joint program with FCM, a special plenary session on Monday brought CUTA and FCM members together. The session included a keynote address to FCM and CUTA delegates by John Baird, Federal Minister of Transportation. Baird’s address showed an awareness of the importance of public transit and sustainable development, and of the need for partnerships between all levels of government. He highlighted the federal government’s fast tracking of the application processes for infrastructure funding, and noted, to applause, that from now on “municipalities can begin work immediately after the announcement of funding” and that work need not wait for formal funding approvals. “We are confident that with your ongoing commitment and partnership we will deliver projects,” concluded Baird. After Baird’s speech, CUTA then took the stage to launch the Vision 2040 project, CUTA’s blueprint for the future.
