Massachusetts Fire Chief 2009 - (Page 37) ADVERTISERS.COM The fire at the Strand Theatre was most likely burning undetected in the ceiling/ roof cockloft area after traveling upward in the concealed wall spaces between the outside brick walls and the wire lath and plaster inside walls. The heat of the fire distorted the long steel roof trusses causing them to dislodge from the brick wall truss pockets and crash down onto the balcony. Unexpected building collapse is one of the dangers that fi refighters face when operating inside of a burning building. From past tragedies, such as was experienced at this fire, lessons are learned and fi refighters become better educated about the dangers they encounter. The dangers of truss construction and their weakness when exposed to fire is something every Firefighter should be well aware of. As Frank Branningan always warned: “Beware of the Truss.” There are many similar structures today of a similar design all over the country.
