The first house that Jeffrey Silberstein, AIA, designed for construction in Bonaire won an AIA award and was published in florida/caribbean Architect in 2001. Since designing that first house, Silberstein went on to design other projects in Bonaire, from a jewelry store to a restaurant. Local people, like the owner of this home, saw the work and discussions about the project began several years ago. The owner of this house is a local resident who was familiar with the firm’s work, and discussions about the project began several years ago. Some of the difficulties inherent in working in another country were overcome by the fact that Jeffrey Silberstein is conversant in a number of languages including the dialect Papiamentu, which is spoken on the island. Finding skilled laborers is always difficult, although there are excellent finishers for tile, stone, carpentry, painting and other technical areas. In anticipation of this, the architect brought in qualified installers for exterior windows and doors, pool, audio and low-voltage, kitchen, solar panels and HVAC. The architect also procured all building materials except for the actual concrete shell and furnished the house for the client, right down to the flatware. The site occupied by the house is one-third of an acre at the end of a cul-de-sac sandwiched between two double-story residences. The depth of the property runs from northeast to southwest and is perfectly aligned with the local trade winds. The outline of the house and the location of the rooms are influenced by its proximity to neighboring structures as well as wind direction and water views.
