Optimism and the Future of Our Businesses
would like to start by thanking everyone who helped make this year’s FPMA Convention and Sunshine Food & Fuel Expo such a great success. This year’s show had a greater attendance and the Expo was sold out with a waiting list! The commitment of our supplier members helped bring a great offering of food service products and convenience-store specific offerings we have not seen in many years. Our FPMA staff, most of them experiencing our Convention and Expo for the first time, did a tremendous job. Ned did a great job of continuing to build our sponsorships. The Marriott World Center was a super venue and their service was above and beyond expectations. The Convention Committee and staff are already hard at work planning another great event for 2013. There are many new and exciting ideas already being discussed, including a great tribute to our past chairmen and Hall of Fame members. We look forward to an even bigger and better Convention and Expo in 2013! As most of you know by now, Stephanie Hinton had to take an unexpected leave of absence from our Board of Directors for personal reasons and was unable to serve as chair this year as had been planned. Stephanie has worked very hard for many years and was a key part of the revitalization and financial turnaround of our association. I want to take this opportunity to thank Stephanie and make sure she knows we are looking forward to her return to the leadership of our association. This unexpected turn of events lead to my early election to the chair position. Following the year-and-a-half term Bruce Mitchell served as chair (his second go around) was an intimidating prospect. Bruce took the helm of FPMA in a very uncertain and tumultuous time and the result has proven Bruce was the best person for the job. His always positive and never wavering commitment to the success and prosperity of our association was an inspiration to our entire Board and our membership as a whole. Bruce’s legacy is truly unmatched and our association owes a great debt of gratitude to Bruce, his company and his family for their sacrifice. As I look forward to the next year, I am very optimistic about the role FPMA membership will serve in this very important election year and upcoming legislative session. This election is so very important to the future of our country, and in many cases, to the future of our own businesses. The cost of additional government regulations and the overreaching intrusion on our personal liberties could lead to devastating consequences to both small and large businesses and will have a negative impact on our companies, our employees and our families. It is vitally important that we all exercise our right to vote! Beyond the election, we will move into what promises to be a very busy legislative session. It will be another very tough year from the state budget standpoint, and we are sure to face challenges for our industry. There will be an even greater pressure on consumer issues which can create even more financial and logistic burdens on our businesses. We will need to be ready to show a strong marketer presence in Tallahassee. We are fortunate to have the strong and respected representation by Mike Huey and his team: Chris Hansen, Todd Steibly and Ty Jackson of Gray-Robinson.
