THE SITE ALSO FEATURES A LIST OF CHARITIES THAT ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR EQUIPMENT AND ITEMIZES THE DEVICES THAT ARE MOST URGENTLY NEEDED. —Susan Bowness You’ll notice some subtle changes to this year’s HRPAO Annual Conference and Trade Show—Innovate ’08, including a lot less paper to lug back home. Instead of carrying a bag full of CD-ROMs, brochures and other papers around the conference, materials will be available for download to registered attendees from the HRPAO website. In fact, there will be almost no paper onsite at the conference, and it’s just one part of the sustainability efforts being leveraged to ensure the conference—and all HRPAO events going forward—is environmentally sound. Other sustainability measures being implemented include: sourcing local suppliers to cut down on travel costs and energy use; serving locally grown, organic food; and promoting public transit. Another initiative is the Exhibitor Eco Champion award. In keeping with the green theme of this year’s conference, exhibitors have been encouraged to think environmentally friendly when putting together their booths. Exhibitors will be judged on their efforts by show visitors, with the Eco Champion prize going to the booth with the most votes. For HRPAO events director Marta Pawych, the time is right for going green. “Our mandate as an association is to be sustainable,” she says. “Plus, as HR professionals, our members are taking the responsibility for being the sustainability leaders in their own organizations—it’s up to them to roll out the environmental initiatives at their workplaces. It’s clear that we have to keep on top of these issues and lead by example.” Education Top marks for Human Resources and Compensation Committee exam The Directors College’s Human Resources and Compensation Committee recently announced the results of its first-ever certified examination. Seven candidates wrote the four-hour, 150question exam, and earned an average grade of 80.4 per cent (with 70 per cent being the passing grade). The program looks at the role of the compensation committee in aligning an w w w.H RThought L eader. c om organization’s human resources, HR processes and culture to its business strategy. It is tailored for directors and senior corporate officers to learn how leading corporations apply the latest corporate governance principles, practices and insights to compensation committee procedures.
