HR Professional - February/March 2008 - (Page 6) EDITOR’S LETTER hen I was growing up, my parents were dedicated conservationists. While the furthest thing from hippies—they were British immigrants, my father a chemistry professor and my mother a nurse—they did reuse whatever they could (bottles, jars, fabric), grew their own vegetables and had a stinky compost heap at the back of our property. My Dad’s heroes included ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau and scientist David Suzuki, host of The Nature of Things. It was on this groundbreaking program where I learned about the industrialization of Asia, the AIDS epidemic and the destruction of the B.C. rainforest. I remember the episodes were always controversial— evoking feelings of outrage and inspiration—but the content was (and still is) rooted in science. So when it came to planning this issue dedicated to sustainability—one of the biggest issues facing HR and business right now—I jumped at the chance to interview the legendary broadcaster and environmentalist. What Suzuki has to say about the role business—and especially the government—plays in fighting global warming is eye-opening. Going green is no longer a simple way to generate media attention. The reality is that reducing your carbon footprint is essential to your company’s economic survival. Journalist Elizabeth Kelly investigates this relationship in “Turning Green into Gold” on page 28. Anthony Watanabe, managing partner of Transition Plus Sustainability Solutions, illustrates the importance of green to your employment brand on page 47. And Eve Lazarus introduces some of the leading Canadian companies in the expanding field of green technology—and their HR issues—in “Sustainable Skills” on page 38. I am hoping you noticed when we redesigned the magazine last month, we also changed our paper. I receive more mail about the type of paper we use than anything else. Based on your concerns, we have switched to an even more eco-friendly paper stock. HR Professional’s new paper is made up of 50 per cent recycled coated sheet, 15 per cent post-consumer waste and is acid and chlorine free. On the subject of trends, as communication becomes more global, fads come and go with increasing frequency. Associate editor Duff McCutcheon looks at some of HR’s past trends and whether they stood the test of time or faded into the woodwork. As always, I hope you enjoy the issue and I’d love to hear your comments; please e-mail me at mbirchall@hrpao.org.
