HR Professional - February/March 2009 - (Page 6) EDITOR’S LETTER FUTURE FORECAST hile we do our best to bring HR Professional readers the latest in people management and workplace developments every issue, a lot goes into delivering something special for the annual trends feature. We scour business magazines and journals, read countless studies and b t talk to global experts to get a bead on what the future holds f for HR. The editorial team then meets, brainstorms, consults w with our editorial advisory board and pares down the list to t the big hits on the HR horizon. Of the top five trends we’ve featured in this issue, some w will be new and some may be new spins on old ideas; regardl less, these are the trends that are finding their way, in some incarnation or another, into workplaces across Canada. In reality, all the forecasting in the world can’t really predict the future and there are so many factors that influence trends. For example, as we’ve seen in the last few tumultuous months, the economy can change on a dime, resulting in organizations having to completely refocus their strategies. In addition to our trends feature (on page 28), I also spoke with University of Toronto professor David Foote, author of the Boom, Bust & Echo book series, about how demographics influences b business trends, on page 57; and we show you how to create a d diversity strategic plan, on page 49. I welcome your feedback on our trends stories. Please feel f free to e-mail me at mbirchall@hrpa.ca.
