Wh Who among us can say they’ve never G th ’ Googled ld themselves? It’s always interesting to see what’s floating around about you in the cyber ether. And if you’ve had a job interview within the last few years, it’s a safe bet that your interviewer has Googled you too. Many employers are now using the tool to help screen potential hires. So what will a Google search tell potential employers? William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson, co-authors of Career Distinction: Stand Out by Building Your Brand created an online identity calculator to help people evaluate their current online profile and create a plan to enhance it by increasing their “GQ” or “Google Quotient. ” Users Google themselves, answer the survey questions and the online system calculates the score. The score is based on two criteria: the volume of results and relevance—how consistent the results are with how you want to be perceived. But the average age of personnel leaving the Canadian Forces (CF) is 36, and these people are looking for second careers. Fortunately, a new job placement program from the Ministry of Veterans Affairs is making the transition easier. Co-ordinating the program is career transition firm Right Management. Monika Morrow, vice-president of transition services, Right Management Canada, says there’s much interest in this talent pool—especially from firms in the financial, energy and retail sectors. Morrow says CF vets bring a lot of soft skills from their military training that are in high demand in many industries. “Soldiers have been tested in pressure situations, they learn quickly, their planning and organizational skills are usually excellent, and obviously they know a lot about teamwork,” she says.
