It doesn’t take much effort to communicate to your employees that those policies logically extend to their online activities as well. HRP: What do you think about companies banning social media sites altogether? CM: Social media activity is becoming necessary, not just for people’s personal lives but for their professional lives as well. I’ve seen a lot of my own business e-mail migrate to Facebook. If I went to an organization that didn’t allow me to access Facebook, it would affect my efficiency in the office as well as my business relationships. An organization that restricts Facebook and access to all blogs is essentially cutting off its nose to spite its face. HRP: What are the possibilities for employers in the realm of social media? CM: The possibilities are stunning. Take IBM: they have 11,000 internal blogs, 95,000 entries and 4.5 million downloads of their internal podcasts. Granted, it’s a giant company with a tech-savvy audience, but if you consider that as a petri dish for what you can do, it can advance your internal communications way beyond the standard employee newsletter and company e-mail. That’s the biggest advantage of social media tools like wikis, podcasts and blogs—you give people the mechanisms to interact much more flexibly then they would by just sending each other e-mails. HRP: I recently heard a story about an intern at the Anglo Irish Bank in the U.S. who was busted by his employer because of a Halloween party picture that was posted on his Facebook page the same day he missed work because of a family emergency. Is it legal for employers to use what they find on social media against employees or potential employees? CM: When you use Google, you are searching public information and it should be expected.
