HR Professional - June/July 2008 - (Page 22) COVER STORY THE BROAD PERSPECTIVE In Canada’s top executive offices, women are virtually absent. What does it take to get women into the top of the corporate world? BY MICHELLE MORRA N OT ALL LEADERS KNOW THEIR DESTINY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD. But when six-year-old Paula Roberts was one of many students in a public school music program, the teacher announced Paula would be the conductor of the band. She remembers how good that felt—and not just because she got to wear a little gold braid on her cape. “I really enjoyed representing those people,” she says. “They made me proud, and I wanted to make them proud.” Today, the vice-president of marketing at Sick Kids Foundation says that same spirit embodies her leadership style. In fact, she has come to see great leadership as a bit like conducting. “It’s not about using words. You’re standing in front of people and letting them shine.” SAD REALITY Very few little girls grow up to be the big boss. Only 37 women work in the top executive offices—vice-presidents, chief operating offi cers, chief financial officers—of Canada’s 100 largest publicly traded companies, according to a report by management consulting firm Rosenzweig & Company Inc., which also found that 97 of these companies have male chief executive officers. What’s more, the same study found that 40 per cent of managerial positions are occupied by women. So women only get so far before the proverbial glass ceiling stops them. Forty years after the sexual revolution, how can this be? Is it that women don’t have what it takes to be great leaders? “We have really good data on what makes a good leader in contemporary organizations,” says Alison Konrad, professor of organizational behaviour at Western’s Ivey School of Business and Corus Entertainment Chair in Women in Management. Leaders, she says, must have credibility, good communications skills and the ability to focus on the growth and development 22 J u n e / J u l y 2 0 0 8 HR P R OF E S S I ON A L
