HR Professional - June/July 2008 - (Page 45) CASE ST U DY GOLD STANDARD People management was critical in the recent amalgamation of two rival mines in one community BY DUFF MCCUTCHEON A successful merger of two organizations is many things, but how often does it involve building bridges among neighbourhoods and sports teams? Such was the challenge faced last year by Canadian gold producer Goldcorp Inc. after it took over operations of its rival Campbell Mine in Red Lake, a remote northwestern Ontario town. Since 1949, the mine site—Canada’s largest gold mine, at 700,000 ounces per year—was home to two rival and neighbouring mines: Placer Dome’s Campbell Mine and Goldcorp’s Red Lake Mine. The 5,000 residents of the mining town owed their livelihoods—and allegiances—to one of the operations, and it was rare when the two sides mixed. “There was a lot of history between the two mines and there was quite a rivalry—to the extent there were separate sports teams and social events,” says Goldcorp human resources VP Gerry Atkinson.
