HR Professional - June/July 2008 - (Page 47) “Today we’re a little bit in between, although we still lean toward decentralization. We want the mine management to be actively involved with decisions, with some guidance from corporate—but we don’t intervene on a daily basis.” Unfortunately for Gagnon, choosing a management group from the two organizations was one of his harder tasks because both teams were strong. But it was this handpicked management team from both organizations that lead the way in selling the merger to Red Lake’s “two solitudes.” “In terms of linking the community, there was a new corporate identity in town and we picked the management structure to make it work within the community,” says Atkinson. “From the beginning, we brought in a mine general manager from one of our other Canadian mine sites because one of his particular strengths is building teams and getting them involved in the community.” says Atkinson. “They were heavily involved with communication in terms of what was happening.” “The worst thing that anyone can do during periods of massive change is tell people that nothing’s going to change,” says Gagnon. “You have to communicate that things will change, but we’re going to try to make it as painless as possible and we’ll work through it with you. And the changes are positive changes for the company, the operation and the community.” 372334 CINEPLEX Fun is ENTERTAINMENT Good for Business. 1/2v CMYK [ISLAND] p.47 Happy employees are productive employees. Key to success Critical to building bridges within the community was spokespeople chosen from both organizations to act as liaisons between management, workers and the greater community. The spokespeople were articulate staffers with long-term links to the mines who could act as advocates and speak positively of the move. Part of their role was to meet with employees and the community and be supportive of the whole amalgamation process—answering questions and dispelling rumours. “A big part of the merger’s success was these spokespeople,” w w w.H RThought L eader. c om 1-800-313-4461 corporatesales@cineplex.com J u n e / J u l y 2 0 0 8 47 ® Cineplex Entertainment LP or used under license. cineplex.com/corporatesales http://www.cineplex.com/corporatesales http://www.HRThoughtLeader.com
