HR Professional - August/September 2008 - (Page 6) EDITOR’S LETTER THE CHINESE DRAGON n western mythology, dragons are aggressive creatures that must be killed because they stand in the way of life, happiness and princesses in need of rescuing. In the east, however, the dragon is a symbol of good luck, wealth and success. Not to be confused with greed, this dragon represents prosperity. I think this difference is symbolic of the confusion over what China now represents to the West. China is currently experiencing dramatic economic prosperity. And while it’s no longer the haven for cheap manufacturing and labour it once was, foreign companies are investing heavily in existing companies or opening new outposts to tap this market of billions of consumers. The Chinese also are getting into the act and competing with the biggest global players. Not to mention, the Chinese Development Bank has a lot of money to invest in foreign companies and industries—including finance, insurance and real estate. The reality is that in the next 10 years, many HR professionals in Canada will be outsourcing some part of their business to China or working for a company with a Chinese operation or for an entirely foreign-owned entity. Writer Elizabeth Kelly explores the implications of this on page 24. For this China special, I spoke with Annette Verschuren, president of The Home Depot Canada and China, to discuss her company’s expansion into that region. You’ll find that interview on page 41. We also feature insightful articles on improving working memory to help those employees struggling with cognitive tasks, such as older workers, those with head injuries or stroke victims, on page 23; the dos and don’ts of combating workplace bullies, on page 35; and harnessing anxiety, on page 58. Enjoy!
