I can’t think of a better issue to launch our new look—and eye-catching new nameplate—than with an issue devoted to employer branding. Branding is about the image projected and associated with your organization and/or products and services. Employer branding turns the spotlight on the image your company projects to current and potential employees. Branding is the of-the-moment HR topic and is heralded as the key to winning the talent war. To deliver all the latest information on this topic, we worked with some leading employer branding experts and you’ll find lots of food for thought in these pages. The redesign itself has been an exciting process. I have spent the past year researching other publications, meeting with readers and the editorial advisory board, conducting focus groups, and compiling the various comments you’ve made to me to determine what it is that you want from this magazine. What you told me was that you wanted a visually appealing publication packed with information that was easy to find and read. I worked closely with our graphics specialist, Marianna Gajewska, to determine how we could best deliver this. We then teamed up with Dean Mitchell from Fresh Art & Design, an award-winning company that specializes in magazine redesigns, to put our ideas into a format that will be interesting for years to come. While refreshing the look, I turned a critical eye to the articles to ensure our commitment to elevating the quality of the content—a mission I have been on since I started here—is continuing. To that end, we’ve hired a first-rate associate editor, Duff McCutcheon, to work on the publication. Duff is handling and writing the revamped upfront section—one of your favourite sections—along with some new columns and features that you’ll see in upcoming issues. We’ve also expanded our purview to include a wider range of subjects, such as HR 101 and strategy columns. Not one to fix things that aren’t broken, your favourites are still here including columns on law, compensation and communication. I hope you enjoy the new look. I’d love to hear your comments at mbirchall@hrpao.org.
