Vanessa Hammock (pictured) has established a scholarship to help the future generation of HR professionals. Hammock, a project director of corporate HR renewal with the government of Nova Scotia, was inspired to create the award after she was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. The prospect of dying prompted her to share her passion for HR with others and the idea of a scholarship was born. “My career was cut short, but I decided I could help someone just getting started,” she said. Hammock decided to provide the award to the Nova Scotia Community College on the strength of its human resource management advanced diploma program and the inaugural winner was Karen Damtoft—a relative latecomer to HR, with 18 years working in the non-profit sector. Damtoft says she’s deeply moved by the award. “I’m awed by the fact that someone who loves the HR profession so much wants to foster the same passion in others, and I’ll work to ensure I’m a good example to C. Vanessa Hammock Award winners in the future.” TIP FROM THE TOP RETIREMENT Just when you got employees to stay off Facebook during work hours, Standard Life has introduced a new online retirement dashboard so employees can track and manage their retirement planning. The site provides members with an overview of their planning activities, contributions, account balances, asset allocations and projected retirement assets, every time they log on to the website. Members can customize their homepage, seek guidance, understand income needs and gaps and be more proactive in building their retirement assets, says Standard Life. The new tool comes in response to a recent survey that NEW ONLINE RETIREMENT PLANNING TOOL showed most Canadians review their statements every year, but do nothing to align their retirement plans with their needs. Standard Life has also added a new site for plan sponsors, which allows sponsors to submit contributions electronically, analyze performance data, provide allocation instructions for forfeited amounts, consult reference information online, and download reports and member information. It offers plan sponsors the possibility to do online member pre-enrolment and termination, as well as authorize access to certain protected areas of the site to their administrative staff.
