HR Professional - December/January 2008 - (Page 17) UPFRONT DIVERSITY | Recruiting The talent potential among Ontario’s persons with disabilities is huge, yet many employers still cling to some common stereotypes, according to Jane Enright of the Job Opportunity Information Network (JOIN)— Toronto Region. “The No. 1 myth is that they’re not as skilled or qualified,” says Enright. “Obviously this is false—persons with disabilities cut across all skill and education levels. The second misconception is the cost of accommodating persons with disabilities. In most cases, this is also false, with research showing accommodating workers with disabilities is often minimal and sometimes free. For example, in working with a deaf person, accommodating them may be as simple as speaking directly to them or writing down instructions,” she says. J O I N F I N D S TA L E N T F R O M OV E R L O OK E D S OU R C E JOIN is an initiative of community agencies that provides employment services for people living with disabilities, as well as services for employers to recruit qualified candidates. Since January 2008, the organization has placed 1,157 people and “that includes everything from entry level to highly skilled positions. We have an employer network—a group of recruitment professionals from all of our 24 agencies that work together to share job leads. It helps the employer because they fill jobs more quickly. If you’ve got a job, we farm it out to our member agencies and we’ve got over 1,000 people at any given time looking for employment,” says Enright. For more information, go to www.joininfo.ca.
