HR Professional - December/January 2008 - (Page 37) A ASK QUESTIONS IN C CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. A AVOID JUMPING FROM ONE TOPIC T TO THE NEXT AND BACK AGAIN. A ASK QUESTIONS IN A C CONVERSATIONAL STYLE. R RECORD THE I INTERVIEW. ACCOUNT, CLARIFY AND CHALLENGE This process is the meat and potatoes of your interview. This will get the fine-grain detail of the account and help determine if the suspect is being truthful. Suspects who are lying will entrap themselves during this process. Getting the account: First ask the subject to tell you what happened without interruption. Resist the temptation to ask questions. When the subject is finished, summarize the account back to them. This accomplishes several aims: it acts as a memory aide; it lets the subject know you are listening and allows the subject to correct any errors, which commits them to their story. Clarifying the account: Using this account of events, the interviewer breaks it up into manageable sections, using clarifying questions to probe for more details to get a better understanding of the story. Ask questions around PELT: people, events, locations, times. For example: Who did you see? Who were you with? Describe the room. What time was that? How long were you there? Once you have these details, repeat each section of the account back to them. If they are lying, this is where they may have trouble keeping track because they’ve now had to make up a lot of information. If there are inconsistencies or contradictions to the evidence you have or in what the subject has already said, don’t question them on it when you hear it. Just let them continue. If you challenge them immediately, it gives them the chance to change their story; but if you include the w w w.H RThought L ea der. c om inconsistency in the summary and they tell you it’s right, you now have a topic to challenge them on later. A deceptive subject wants to be believed and will be under an increasing amount of stress to give more details about a fictitious account—they need to convince you of the lie. As the lies mount, continue to repeat them back to GardaWorld Consulting & Investigation Experts — Help protect your people and assets Discreet Approach ■ Extensive Global Experience ■ Integrity and high-quality standards For decades, Fortune 500 corporations, law firms, financial institutions and government agencies around the world have trusted GardaWorld to provide turnkey consulting and investigation services to protect their people and assets.
