Enterprises will join high-volume, low-cost industry value networks. In these virtual business ecosystems, traditional competitors will become strategic allies. We are starting to see this today with traditional competitors sharing components with each other. An example is the automotive manufacturing industry, where companies share engine components or other system enhancements. The boundaries that define today’s enterprise will continue to rupture as loosely coupled components replace integrated functional silos. The workplace of tomorrow will no longer be characterized by the mindless repetition of the factory floor, but rather a design studio where the core values are collaboration and innovation. Some organizations, instead of looking for long-tenure employees, will focus more on core skills and value to individual projects. In this scenario, employees are attracted to projects and ideas versus institutions. Organizations will need to adjust their views and approach to work design in order to compete for talent.
