HR Professional - December/January 2008 - (Page 53) I N T E RV I EW B Y M E R E D I T H B I R C H A L L- S P E N C E R DONNA WILSON SHARES HER GOLD MEDAL PEOPLE STRATEGY FOR VANCOUVER’S 2010 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES A s executive vice-president of human resources, sustainability and international client services for Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics, Donna Wilson sums u up her role as “responsible for everything that has to do with people, relationships and lasting legacy.” This includes hiring the 1,200 l p paid employees and 25,000 volunteers that w will eventually work for the 2010 Olympic and P Paralympic Winter Games, as well as overseeing the official languages and sustainability p portfolios. HR Professional spoke with Wilson l a about her human resources strategy and how she is executing her role as “culture keeper.” HRP: Did you arrive with an HR strategy or did you develop it as an executive team? D DW: It was really left up to me. I arrived when the executives and the board were trying to define what the vision and mission of V Vancouver’s Games would be and what the m mission of the organizing committee would be. M My first task was developing the vision and m mission and moving it through the organization, w which was, at the time, 50 people. I engaged the employees, as well as the executive and the b board, in its development and we established that w we needed a values-based leadership group and o organization.
