HR Professional - December/January 2008 - (Page 56) I N T ERV I EW What became clear to me in both Torino and Beijing is that HR strategies are culturally influenced. a supervisor instead of solving the problem themselves. In North America, our volunteers will be very independent thinkers because, based on our volunteer applications, our demographics are older. The average age of our volunteers is between 30 and 40 years old. HRP: What are the most common HR concerns you’re facing? DW: There are two that are unique to this organization and I’ve never run into either before. Because we have a very thorough screening process and have the benefit of people wanting to work for something sexy like the Olympic Games, we’ve been able to hire very talented people. But sometimes these high achievers can’t translate their past success or apply their skills because ‘‘ ’’ of the level of changeability and the complexity in this environment. I’ve seen many people struggle because their normal skill sets aren’t working for them here. The second issue is the amount of change and the effect it has on the workforce. We’re growing at 100-plus per month. You can show up tomorrow and have different people sitting around you because we’ve got more people working here. Beyond that we’re also changing from a functional organizational model to a matrix organization with a decentralized staffing model. What keeps me up at night is really figuring out how to solve the impact these issues have on the human beings here.
