Published November 2008/HRP-S0608/7054 A re our workplaces prepared for a multigenerational workforce? The U.S. will see a 30 per cent increase in the 45 to 64 age group by 2010; and the number of Canadians aged 55 to 64—those most likely thinking about retirement—has jumped by 28 per l c cent in the past five years, to 3.7 million. A recent study b by The New York Times reveals that 68 per cent of execus tives perceive the aging workforce to be a more pressing i issue than globalization. While realistically there isn’t going to be a mass exodus o of boomers once they turn 65, with many provinces backing away from mandatory retirement, we do need to concern ourselves with how and when older workers exit their careers. If not addressed, these productive people will leave your organization to “retire,” which could involve golf, grandkids and some part time or contract work—with your competitor. HR needs to be proactive in polling its older workers, discerning if and how much they want to work and creating flexible work environments and processes to keep their valuable skills and knowledge in the fold. Michelle Morra takes a revealing look at this issue a and showcases the results of a recent Canadian study o of HR professionals undertaken by Human Resources P Professionals Association (HRPA) and Life’s Next Steps, a company that provides organizations with retirement solutions, starting on page 28. This special issue on “the golden years” also features an in-depth look at phased retirement, on page 23 and eldercare benefits, on page 19.
