Toyota and IIE Opening Minds to the World Toyota Shares IIE’s Commitment to Opening Minds TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., Inc., the U.S. sales and marketing arm of Toyota, received the IIE 2006 “Opening Minds Corporate Leadership” award for the Toyota International Teacher Program. This program is a unique, all-expenses-paid opportunity for U.S. teachers to expand global perspectives in their classrooms and communities through short-term, professional development study visits to Japan, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands. According to TMS Group Vice President Irving Miller, this is not a typical award for Toyota. “We frequently win awards for our products and hitting sales goals, and we take great pride in them. Not because we want to amass awards or bragging rights, but they represent quality, and achievement, and satisfaction. Our community initiatives are viewed through a different lens, though. We support these programs because they meet a need in society that resonates with Toyota principles and values. So we are extremely honored to receive this award. It validates the importance of the program.” The Toyota International Teacher Program was developed in 1998 in response to management’s understanding that the In 2005, Toyota USA contributed $41 million to U.S. philanthropic initiatives with a majority supporting education. Programs include Toyota TAPESTRY, the largest grant program of its kind for science teachers, that awards $550,000 in grants each year; and Toyota Community Scholars, which annually awards $1 million in scholarships based on academics and community service.
