Jetrader - March/April 2008 - (Page 10) J: Is there one memory from a previous conference that stands out more than the others? MP: I would say it’s the moment in 2006 in Orlando when Steve Hazy suggested that the A350 needed to be redesigned, and it was. That was the catalyst for it. He said it needed to have a wider fuselage. Shortly thereafter, Airbus announced a redesign. When he made that com- ment, it was picked up by the international press. It was all over the place. J: How can you judge if an ISTAT conference has been a success? MP: It’s successful if you leave knowing more people than when you arrived. I always think it’s a successful conference when people are doing business buying, selling and trading aircraft and engines—when you see people out in the hallways with papers and signing pens. It’s a sign of success to hear that several big transactions were conceived or signed at the conference. I think the other sign of success is how many people come back year after year. When it grows every year, you know it’s been a success. ©istockphoto.com/Chic Type Reflections on Past Conferences ISTAT Members Share Their Conference Experiences Tom Heimsoth ISTAT Past President ISTAT holds a unique position in our industry as a not-for-profit organization providing a valuable forum for our diverse, global membership. It has been an honor to be a longtime member of ISTAT and to have had the privilege to volunteer my time to serve the membership. From my very first ISTAT annual meeting, the members were incredibly open and supportive, with information valuable to our newly started aviation-finance business. It’s a tribute to the ISTAT membership, and I salute their 25 years of continuous volunteer efforts and financial support and staff with their commitment and desire to bring value to our members and retain our organization’s relevancy in our industry. ISTAT members—both current and past—and its staff should be proud of their remarkable contributions, support of and service for our membership over the past 25 years. Roland H. Moore, Esq. Aviation Attorney I couldn’t even tell you how many conferences I’ve been to. I think it’s the greatest thing next to sliced bread. The thing that many of us like is that we’ve all worked together in one form or another in aircraft trading. You meet old friends and talk about old times and then meet new people and make contacts with people who basically speak the same language. You deal with people of all different backgrounds, but when you start talking about airplanes, it’s a universal language. The educational component of ISTAT is something I’m very interested in. We’re very concerned that the next generation is not as interested in aviation as our generation was, and we’re having a hard time recruiting young people into careers in all segments of aviation, the pilot field in particular. They’re being lured into jobs in high-tech fields and computers. Networking is one thing, but giving back is very important to us because as we sort of fade away, if you will, we want to serve as a component for the next generation. At each one of these conferences over the last few years, we’ve brought students, and we’ll be bringing six topnotch students from around the world to Orlando. We see some of them as being future airline presidents. We do a roundtable reception just before the gala dinner and invite them to meet some icons in our industry. It’s very satisfying to see these kids come up to you and thank you at the end of the conference. 10 The official publication of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading
