appraisal Bombardier CRJ-700 John Keitz President, BK Associates, Inc. 516-365-6272 john.keitz@bkassociates.com Background The Bombardier Regional Jet Series 700 is a stretched, 70- to 78-seat variant of the 50-seat Canadair Regional Jet Series 100 and 200 aircraft and first entered service in 1999. It is powered by two General Electric CF34-8C1 engines. There are three versions of the 700 series: the 700, 701 and 702. They are physically identical and the only difference is the number of seats they are certified for. This distinction was made to accommodate pilot scope clauses and can be amended by a paperwork change from Bombardier. In fact, no 700s have ever been sold. A still further stretch to 90 seats—the CRJ-900—entered service in 2003. It has the same fuselage cross-section as the -700 but is 12 feet longer and allows for four additional rows of seating. Two hundred forty have been ordered and 216 were in service as of October 2009. The CRJ-1000, powered by General Electric CF34-8C5A engines, will enter service this year. So far, 44 have been ordered. Basic Specs Wingspan 76.25 Ft. Length 106.6 Ft. The CRJ170 is competitive with its ERJ competitors in most respects there are 306 in service or on order with 16 operators vs. 320 with 26 operators for the ERJ170 family. According to U.S. DOT data, the operating cost per seat-block hour is 20.3 cents for the ERJ vs. 20.9 cents for the CRJ. It’s hard to say the future market is much better for one or the other. However, as this is written, the bankruptcy of Mesa Airlines was just announced, and 78 aircraft will be idled. Mesa has 30 CRJ-700s.
