Bombardier Inc. uses input from airlines to design its new CSeries aircraft

If you’re reading this from the comfort of a high-end office chair, then half an inch of space likely doesn’t mean that much to you. But if you’re stuck in the middle seat on a long flight, an extra half an inch might seem as valuable as any piece of real estate on the market. The “dreaded middle seat,” as Bombardier Inc.’s Sebastien Mullot referred to it recently, was just one area where the company looked for improvement when designing its new CSeries aircraft, which Bombardier is marketing toward the longer-range, single-aisle, 100- to 149-seat market. Mullot, the CSeries program director, said Bombardier worked closely with airline representatives to create an aircraft that addresses their needs. Essentially, the idea was to let airlines tell Bombardier what they want so the company can then sell it to them. “I’m really focused on the interaction with customers,” Mullot said. “My primary responsibility in that field is making sure that the customer requirements that were defined when we launched the program are actually incorporated into the design. We’re delivering on the commitments that we’ve made to customers when designing the aircraft.” The CSeries program was launched in late 2008, and Montreal-based Bombardier hopes to have the first of its
