ISTAT member Roland Moore (right) had a chance to meet with Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger on board the flight from Miami to Charlotte.
ISTAT members Ronald Bevans, Jon Batchelor and and David Sutton were a few of the ISTAT members on the flight to honor Captain “Sully.”
ISTAT members David Sutton, Captain Vito LaForgia, Eastern Airlines flight attendant Karyle Martin Rodenbeck and Andy LaStella enjoy the flight experience on the only surviving DC-7B.
The Historical Flight Foundation, led by Roger Jarman, arranged for the flight on the only surviving DC-7B in the world, a restored Eastern Air Lines airplane. Volunteers worked very hard to put the flight together, inviting some 40 distinguished passengers (donating $1,000 each to cover costs), CBS news crews and a videographer from EAA, to shoot the event. US Airways veteran pilots Captain Sully Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles had to complete special training for their FAA Second-in-Command ratings. The airplane left Miami at 9 a.m., arriving in Charlotte three hours later, where the flight was met by hundreds of well wishers, news media and water cannons. After the flight, passengers arrived at the Air Museum across from the Charlotte airport terminal where they were able to view the now-famous US Airways A320. The airplane wreckage was transported from New York after having been hauled out of the Hudson River. The ISTAT members who participated in this momentous event included David Sutton, immediate past chair of the ISTAT Foundation, Vito LaForgia and Jon Batchelor, ISTAT Foundation trustees, members Andy LaStella, Roland Moore and Ronald Bevans. All of us at ISTAT felt very privileged to be a part of this historic aviation event. Roland Moore is an aviation attorney and former ISTAT Foundation Chairman and Trustee.
