ISTAT Scholarships Changing Lives
Winners share how ISTAT has made a difference in their careers
Jetrader spoke with two past ISTAT Scholarship winners to hear how receiving the award and being involved in ISTAT has changed their career path in aviation.
selected. It was a great surprise when ISTAT announced the good news to me. JT: After you received the ISTAT Scholarship, you participated in an internship with AAR Corp. What was that experience like? AT: My internship took place at AAR Corp. in Indianapolis, Indiana, where I worked as a MRO Quality Intern to implement Safety Management Systems (SMS) and SOPs in the quality control process for the Quality and Human Factors department while completing my master’s degree. My experience at AAR was very beneﬁcial for my academic subject of aviation safety as I participated in the preparation and implementation of “Check C,” which is when an aircraft is completely disassembled and reassembled. It gives the opportunity to see the aircraft in its slightest details and it is quite a learning experience for an aviation aﬁcionado and a former pilot like me. After graduating with the master’s degree in Aviation Safety, I worked at IATA in Montreal for two years as an expert in Quality and Performance Improvement to ensure the completeness, integrity and validity of IOSA audit reports of airline companies that are members of IATA. JT: You are now working with Air France on a project in the Republic of Congo. Can you tell us a little about what you are doing and what it is like working in the Congo?

Jetrader: Tell us a little about your past. When did you ﬁrst become interested in aviation? Andre Tchouamo: I am from Cameroon and I ﬁrst became interested in aviation after graduating from the University. After ﬂight training I started working as a pilot in early 1990s. Since arriving in the U.S. with my family 14 years ago, I continued aviation training in the areas of aircraft dispatching, advanced ground instruction/ instruments and aviation safety. JT: Tell us about your education. AT: I hold a master’s degree in Aviation Safety from the University of Central Missouri and various aviation licenses such as Air Transport Pilot, Aircraft Dispatcher, and Advanced Ground Instructor/Instruments. I am also an IATA Safety Instructor on Safety Management Systems programs and an IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) auditor. JT: When did you ﬁrst hear about ISTAT, and what was your response when you heard you were selected for an ISTAT Scholarship? AT: I ﬁrst heard about ISTAT during a conference at the aviation department of the University of Central Missouri. I applied for the ISTAT Scholarship and got
