Joe Sutter What follows is the speech delivered by Joseph W. Ozimek, Managing Director Asset Management, Boeing Capital Corp., at the President’s Gala Dinner, which closed out the ISTAT 25th Annual Conference, honoring Joe Sutter for his lifetime of pioneering work in the ﬁeld of aviation. In Honor of Recipient of the 2008 ISTAT Award J oe Sutter has been connected with aviatio literally s aviation literally since birth. His childhood days tion terally l were spent on a hill overlooking the very early beginn beginnings of The Boeing Company’s n production factory, which was just ﬁve years older than Joe. His early memories were of airplanes ﬂying from the factory ﬁeld below and, ev more intriguing memories even of airplanes that took off from the nearby waters. All of us have seen pictures of the Boeing 314 the Flying Boat, The Pan American clipper. But I would wager that few of us, if any, have ever seen one ﬂy. Joe saw all of them, only 12 built, all gone now. In Pursuit of Flight Joe’s high school days found him watching more popular airplanes. He fondly repo members seeing the model 299, four engines and more than a 100-foot wingspan—a giant for its time. The 299 you say? Who has ever heard of the 299? Well, all of us hea built—better known as the B17 Flying at ISTAT, in fact. Nearly 13,000 of them were built—b Fortress. And Joe saw the very ﬁrst one. The Boeing 747, shown here, is just one of many aircraft that Joe Sutter helped to pioneer.
