Jetrader - July/August 2008 - (Page 26) appraisal Boeing B777 Freighter Angus Mackay, ISTAT Appraiser, Senior Manager, SH&E Tel: +1 617 218 2121 / email: amackay@sh-e.com Background The Boeing B777 Freighter was launched in May 2005 and is scheduled to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2008. Based upon the B777-200LR passenger aircraft, the B777 Freighter is to be exclusively powered by two General Electric GE90110B1L or, optionally, GE90115B1L engines. With a structural payload up to 226,700 lbs and a design range of 4,885 nm, the B777 Freighter will meet the London Heathrow QC2 noise standards and have performance capabilities and ton-mile economics unsurpassed by any twin-engine freighter in current service. The B777 Freighter operational design complements B747 cargo operations and the aircraft is seen by Boeing as a replacement for older B747F and MD11F freighters. General industry consensus is that air cargo traffic will grow at an annual rate around 6% over the next 20 years and is forecast to triple by 2026. Allowing for aircraft retirements and passenger to freighter (PTF) conversions, some 630 new large freighters are likely to be delivered over the period. As the smallest large capacity widebody freighter in production from 2010, the B777 Freighter should enjoy strong demand from major airlines, integrators, ACMI operators and specialist cargo operators alike both for current fleet replacement and new additions. Despite their high acquisition costs, in a high utilization, high fuel cost environment, factory built freighters are preferred for their superior reliability, specification, lower operating costs and longer economic useful life.
