Flying High Another successful aviation conference soars with possibilities $10,000 grant from ISTAT was fundamental in the success of the annual Women & Minorities Aviation Career Conference, held March 28, 2009, at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois It was twice the amount of last year’s grant to the program. “The conference was an excellent opportunity to meet women and minority leaders in the industry and discover the path they followed to success,” said Bill Brogan, chair of Aviation and Transportation Studies at Lewis University. “It was a good occasion to ask questions on an individual basis.” The conference attracted a record number of 350 attendees interested in pursuing an aviation career. The ISTAT grant ﬁnanced transportation costs for four bus loads of interested students from a Chicago public high school, community college, Boys & Girls Club members, and military school. It also provided lunches for the students. In addition, the grant enabled the donation of two computers to the Young Eagles program of the Tuskegee Airmen Chicago DODO Chapter. Lewis University made the presentation during the conference to chapter representatives, including Duane Hayden, vice president of the DODO chapter. The Young Eagles program introduces children age 7-17 to aviation with up-close overviews of aircrafts and simulators. Tammera Holmes, president and CEO of AeroStar Corporation, shared her success story as a former participant in the Young Eagles program. The Maywood native expressed gratitude for the program that introduced her to a career in aviation. She still feels passionate about aviation more than a decade later. “It’s my calling,” she said. The conference is sponsored by Lewis University, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, American Eagle, Boeing International, Chicago Dept. of Aviation, Federal Aviation Administration, Chicago Air Trafﬁc Control and Southwest Airlines.
