Jetrader - September/October 2008 - (Page 7) ISTAT calendar 15th European Conference October 5-7, 2008 Hilton Prague Czech Republic ISTAT news An Aviation Centennial On September 17, 1908, the world experienced the first fatality of an airplane passenger when aviation pioneer Orville Wright gave a demonstration ride to Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge of the Signal Corps. Just after the third circuit in front of spectators, a propeller split and the airplane crashed, killing Selfridge and seriously injuring Wright. The Wrights took their first passenger along on May 14, 1908, with the fatality occurring four months and three days later. The lifetime risk today? One in 5,552 for aircraft, and one in 247 for cars.
