How ISTAT’s Foundation Scholarship Program is Changing the Face of the Industry Reaching for the Sky I f yo have the good fortune to speak with an ISTAT Foundation Scholarship Program you recipient for more than a few moments, you will no doubt be inundated with personal reci tales of how the scholarship—and the ISTAT membership, at large—has beneﬁtted the tale recipient’s efforts at obtaining a degree that will lead him or her toward a long career reci within the aviation industry. The beneﬁciaries of this program are quick to point out the with tangible, short-term beneﬁts of the scholarship while also thanking everyone within the tang association who helped them along the way. asso But, what the scholarship recipients might not yet realize is the long-term implicaB tions of having received the scholarship. By continuing to support this program, ISTAT tion members are having a direct impact on the future of the industry—ensuring that the best and brightest students are provided with every option possible in order to complete their education, while also opening the industry up to them in a way that would have been impossible without the Foundation and ISTAT, as a host of industry insiders are now at their beck and call. These connections have led to internships and employment once the college cap and gown has been put away, and it’s a resource worth just as much as the ﬁnancial assistance that the scholarships allow. Meseret Ephrem is one such scholarship winner—recognized in 2008 at the ISTAT 25th Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. She was proﬁled in this publication shortly after the honor while still enrolled in college, but, like many recipients, she has maintained her interest in the industry and now ﬁnds herself in an important new role. As an intern with International Air Transport Association (IATA), Meseret is working alongside IOSA Quality Control/Quality Assurance Expert Andre Tchouamo, himself an ISTAT Foundation Scholarship recipient. Meseret and Andre are working on in the company’s Safety and Infrastructure Department on a long-term project that seeks to make air travel safer. 12 The ofﬁcial publication of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading
