RECEPTION PHOTOS BY JOHN KNOWLES Guests mingle at the ISTAT reception at the Le Pré Catelan. une 15, 2009: The global economy is in a deep recession, commercial aviation drowning in a sea of red ink, funding gaps, huge trafﬁc jams on the “periferique” and pooring rain; what a great setting for the opening day of the 100th anniversary of the Paris Air Show. After years of sunny airshows, “Le Bourget,” the world’s premier aviation showcase seemed to literally be under a cloud this year. During the wet Monday morning hours, for some time it even looked like the traditional afternoon tim demo ﬂights would have to be cancelled because of the weather. Fortunately this fear proved to be unfounded and after some warming-up demo ﬂights around 2 p.m., one of the few really new commercial jets at the show taxied to the runway. As if it was planned that way, the rain stopped the moment a prototype of the Sukhoi Superjet SSJ100 powered up its engines to make its international airshow debut. For many of the western aviation professionals present, the Superjet so far had only been a somewhat vague project from the east, but seeing the small jetliner going through its ﬂ ight routine made one realize that this now is a serious aircraft. Later during the show Superjet underlined this by—as one of the few OEM’s—announcing major new commitments for its product. Another—still less visible—regional jet project from the east came a step closer, as well. In its own chalet, Mitsubishi showed a cabin mockup of the new MRJ regional jet, scheduled to enter service in 2013 .
