forecast and starts fresh with new analysis to ensure it reflects market changes. Recent Reflections Tinseth explains that this year’s report is rooted in the global economic recession, volatile fuel prices and the airlines’ concerted actions to address cost and revenue challenges. In commenting on CMO’s accuracy over time, Tinseth said, going back to 2000, it accurately projected demand distribution by airplane type and the quantity of airplane orders. This year’s forecast expects passenger traffic to grow at an average rate of 4.9 percent each year for the next 20 years. Despite previous ups and down, air travel grew by an average five percent over the past two decades. In terms of market mix (see deliveries and market value chart), the majority (almost 20,000) of the 29,000 projected new airplanes are forecast to comprise single-aisle models with a value of more than $1.4 trillion. That sector is up from last year’s forecast primarily due to strong domestic growth in emerging Asian countries. Several of the 100-seatplus CSeries models are included in the forecast. However, the report reduces its view of demand for regional jets to seven percent of the market by 2028 reflecting the current environment. Airlines are expected to continue to augment their fleets with 6,700 twin-aisle aircraft to serve long-haul or high density routes. Together single- and twin-aisle models represent about 90 percent of the forecast, leaving large airplanes, including freighters, with about three percent of deliveries. Jetrader 21
