Background The DHC-8-300, an 11-foot stretched derivative of the Series 100/200, entered service with Time Air of Canada in 1989 as a newer, moreefficient 50-seat turboprop aircraft to replace the four-engine Dash 7. The type is no longer offered and last delivery was in May 2009. Prior to JAA certification, a modification program was introduced in which stringers were strengthened to result in what has become known as a gust-tuned wing. The gust-tuned wing program was mandated to provide the aircraft more stability in crosswinds. All DHC 8-300 aircraft, beginning with serial number 202, and including all subsequent serial numbers, were built with the modification. The “Q” model designation was introduced in 1996 and refers to the active noise and vibration system (NVS) that reduces average cabin noise levels to 75dBA, similar to the CRJ Regional Jet. However, the aircraft has recently ended production, and the current recession in the industry is affecting all types as demand for air travel weakens and operators worldwide try to cope with a range of uncertainties. Nevertheless, turboprops in this size class will remain suited to a range of regional missions, and the DHC-8-300 benefits from a widespread operator base and being from a family of aircraft.
