Dear fellow ISTAT members, As I sit here today, reﬂecting on the Farnborough Airshow and the excitement of the newest developments in the industry, I am proud to report that a record number of 1,005 attendees joined us in London for the ISTAT reception. I am in an optimistic mood. The industry is certainly showing signs of improvement on several fronts, but we are probably far from “recovered.” Many storm clouds and signiﬁcant uncertainty remain, but activity levels are certainly improving. ISTAT’s mission continues to be as relevant and essential as it was at our founding in 1983: “…to act as a forum and to promote improved communication among those involved in aviation and supporting industries who operate, manufacture, maintain, sell, purchase, ﬁnance, lease, appraise, insure or otherwise engage in activities related to transport category aircraft.” From time to time, members have asked the Board of Directors to consider advocating on various issues. For many reasons, we have thus far opted not to take public positions on industry issues. Primarily, we are not structured to be a lobbying organization. To do this effectively, we would need to expend signiﬁcant resources to build this capability. Perhaps more signiﬁcant is the fact that we have a very broad membership. If we were to take one side of an issue, we would inevitably be working against the interests of a signiﬁcant portion of our membership. The Board has consistently decided that ISTAT is most effective in providing a forum for discussing the issues affecting our industry. To that end, I look forward to seeing you all in Munich for our ISTAT 17th European Conference.
