By David Masson and Pétur P. Johnson Hafthor Hafsteinsson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, 3 January 1966. He sadly passed away in a small airplane crash in the Northern part of Iceland on 2 July 2009. Hafthor left behind his lovely wife, Hjördís, and two sons, 11 and 3 years of age. Hafthor started his aviation career in 1984 when he began his private pilot lessons in Iceland and received his ATPL in 1989. Hafthor gained invaluable experience while still working for his commercial ticket. He became the operations manager for a local ﬂying school, Flugtak, where he also later worked as a ﬂight instructor after obtaining his license. During the early stages of Hafthor’s career, he gained valuable ﬁrsthand knowledge of airline operations while working in the air cargo department of Eagle Air, in crew scheduling for Icelandair and as a pilot for domestic carrier Islandsﬂug. When Hafthor joined Air Atlanta - Icelandic in 1991, it was a small, privately owned airline operating three aircraft on short-term ACMI contracts. His ﬁrst job with the company was as assistant station manager on an ACMI contract based in Khartoum. His skills and capabilities were quickly noted and in the following years he was to play a leading role in assisting Capt. Arngrimur Johannsson in building up Iceland’s largest airline. Hafthor served in several positions within Air Atlanta - Icelandic, as station manager in Europe and Southeast Asia, pilot on the Boeing 737 and Lockheed L-1011, operations manager, VP sales and marketing, and ﬁnally CEO. Hafthor’s appointment as CEO 1 September 2001, came only a few days before the tragic events of September 11th That he was able to steer the company through this difﬁcult time for the aviation industry demonstrated his ability to work with company employees, customers and suppliers in the face of extreme adversity.
