to become the world’s leading ACMI airline with close to 60 aircraft. His vision and drive were instrumental in this growth where he remained very much involved in daily operations and kept very close and personal contact with all of Atlanta’s customers all over of the world. In 2005 Air Atlanta – Icelandic, along with other aviation-related businesses such as Avia Technical Services, became part of Avion Group. Hafthor become the joint CEO of the new logistic and transport company heading the aviation division and served on the board of a number of the subsidiaries. Avion Aircraft Trading was formed in

late 2005 to serve as the fleet acquisition and management tool for the joint fleet of airlines within the group. In 2006 Hafthor left Avion Group to become the Executive Chairman of AAT, which he later purchased in a MBO with his closest associates. Hafthor kept that position until his untimely passing. During these short four years, AAT became a very active player in the aircraft-trading scene with more than 40 aircraft transactions—most of which were widebody freighters or passenger to freighter conversions. In his early years in aviation, Hafthor was very active in sport flying and helped

organize several competitions and other events for private pilots. He never lost his enthusiasm for grassroots aviation, and only a year before his tragic death Hafthor had renewed his private pilot’s license and bought a share in a flying club. Hafthor was also very much aware of need to preserve aviation history and was a strong supporter of the Icelandic Aviation Museum in Akureyri, Iceland. He also took an active role in the development of aviation training in Iceland, serving on the board of the Icelandic Flight Academy for several years. Hafthor was a long-standing ISTAT member who actively attended conferences as speaker, delegate and sponsor. He will be remembered as one of the most likeable characters in the industry whose generosity and light spirits left no one untouched. His relationship to and respect for ISTAT was such that some of his closest colleagues and friends within the community decided to establish a scholarship fund in his memory. The fundraising was exceptionally successful with more than $147,700 raised, reflecting on the tremendous respect and goodwill that Hafthor enjoyed. The fund is raised and managed under the umbrella of ISTAT Foundation. A special thanks to Steve Rimmer of Guggenheim Aviation Partners for being the driving force behind this effort. Those who missed the opportunity to donate in the memory of Hafthor can still do so by contacting the Foundation at 312.321.5169.
